Man fatally struck while crossing road Monday morning in north St. Louis

Investigators were called to the scene at about 6:30 a.m. Monday at Natural Bridge and Arlington avenues.

ST. LOUIS — A man was struck and killed by a car while crossing a road Monday morning in north St. Louis.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said its Accident Reconstruction Unit was investigating the crash, which happened just before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Natural Bridge and Arlington avenues.

According to a preliminary investigation, the unknown man was walking north across Natural Bridge Avenue just before 6 a.m. A witness who was driving westbound on Natural Bridge said they stopped their vehicle at a yellow flashing light to let the man cross within the crosswalk.

At the same time, a Buick Enclave also traveling west on Natural Bridge entered the intersection, and the left front corner of the vehicle struck the man.

He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The vehicle that struck him remained and is cooperating with the investigation.

"It is believed the driver's vision of the pedestrian may have been obstructed by the witness who stopped to allow the pedestrian to pass," police said in a statement.

Police had not yet identified the man as of Monday afternoon.
