Earthquake hits Illinois city outside St. Louis

The magnitude 2.5 earthquake hit the city at around 10:34 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said.

PINCKNEYVILLE, Ill. — An earthquake shook the southern Illinois city of Pinckneyville Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake originated around 3 miles northeast of the city at around 10:34 a.m., officials said. The earthquake was measured the quake at 2.5 magnitude. 

The Geological Survey received seven reports from people in the area about the earthquake, according to the survey's website. The DYFI, or "Did You Feel It," reports were issued from people in Carbondale, Mount Vernon and Harwood Heights. People in Salem and Louisville, Kentucky, and Dacula, Georgia also reported feeling the quake.

It's not the first earthquake southern Illinois residents have felt recently. More than 300 residents felt a 3.1 magnitude earthquake on Dec. 18. A 3.6 magnitude earthquake shook communities around Standard, Illinois on Nov. 15.
