Schnucks recalls applesauce pouches over elevated lead levels

The products can be returned to the Schnucks or Eatwell Market store where the pouches were purchased for a full refund.

ST. LOUIS — Schnucks is recalling applesauce pouches after the supplier notified them of elevated lead levels.

In a press release, Schnucks said the following products were recalled:

  • Schnucks Cinnamon Applesauce Pouch, 12 pack, UPC: 4131801152
  • Schnucks Cinnamon Applesauce Pouch, 4 pack, UPC: 4131801155
  • Schnucks Applesauce Pouch Variety, 20 pack, UPC: 4131801157

The products can be returned to the Schnucks or Eatwell Market store where they were purchased for a full refund. Customers with questions can contact the Schnucks Customer Care team at 314-994-4400 or 1-800-264-4400.

The elevated lead levels were found in the cinnamon raw material used by Austrofood SAS, the manufacturer of the applesauce cinnamon pouches.

It comes days after the FDA issued a voluntary recall for WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches. 

WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée Pouches were distributed nationwide through online and retail stores including Sam’s Club, Amazon and Dollar Tree. The affected product information is as follows:

Lead is toxic to humans and can affect people of any age or health status, the FDA said.

Short-term exposure to lead could result in the following symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain/colic
  • Vomiting
  • Anemia

Longer-term exposure could result in additional symptoms:

  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches or muscle prickling/burning
  • Occasional abdominal discomfort
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty concentrating/Muscular exhaustibility
  • Headache
  • Tremor
  • Weight loss
