'We just want him home': St. Louis County family continues search for missing man with special needs

"I feel terrible. We just wonder, where is he?" said Marty Wehrman, the brother of a missing St. Louis County man.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — "We all love him," said Marty Wehrman.

Wehrman said his younger brother, 61-year-old Stephen Wehrman is friendly, always on the go and an avid walker.

Marty said Stephen has special needs and a learning disability, but those challenges never stopped Stephen.

"He's known all over south county. He's just a good guy and as nice as could be," said Marty.

Wehrman said on the morning of June 6, Stephen left his home on Herpel Lane and walked more than a mile away to a U.S. Bank near South County Center.

Police released several surveillance photos of the missing man inside the bank.

"Seems like everything was fine. Nobody was there with him, so he wasn't being forced to do anything," recalled the man's brother.

Marty said that Tuesday trek was unusual for his brother because the south county man never goes to the bank when he's scheduled to work.

Stephen has worked as a dishwasher at Bartolino's South Restaurant on south Lindbergh for 40 years.

"He didn't show up for work that day and that's what's confusing too because was always so loyal to go to work. They all love him at Bartolino's and he loves working there, too," said Wehrman.

Stephen Wehrman is six feet tall, weighs 175 pounds and wore a Cardinals cap, a Ghostbusters T-shirt and jeans. He was last seen at the bank.

"We put up flyers all around that area," the man's brother said. "My whole family's looking for him. I'm feeling terrible. We miss him."

Seven months ago, the Wehrmans' mom died.

Marty said the loss hit his brother especially hard.

"And he really took care of her and loved mom big time," said Marty.

Now, the family tries to stay positive for Stephen.

"You got to have hope and we do. We just want him home," Marty said.

Investigators are asking anyone who sees Stephen Wehrman to call 911 or St. Louis County Police.
