SHREWSBURY, Mo. — A south St. Louis County Walmart is the latest store in the nation to remove what's come to be known as a common supermarket feature.
The store, located off Watson Road in Shrewsbury, announced Friday it will begin removing its self-checkout lanes on Sunday. Brian Little, the Global Communications Director for Walmart Corporate Affairs, said the decision was made to improve the store experience.

"The decision was based on several factors, including feedback from associates and customers, shopping patterns and business needs in this area," Little said. "We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the chance to provide more personalized and efficient service.”
Little said the self-checkout lanes be replaced with associate-staffed checkouts. The full changeover will take about two weeks.
Other retailers in the St. Louis area have made changes to checkout processes this year.
Schnucks earlier this year announced it would limit the number of items people could purchase in self-checkout lanes to 10 items or fewer, a move criticized for creating long lines by customers.
