Sk8 Liborius, destroyed by fire in June, could roll again

Sk8 Liborius founders are holding a public brainstorming session on Sunday to decide the future of the burned building.

ST. LOUIS — Sk8 Liborius could roll again.

Founders of the north St. Louis skate park will hold a meeting Sunday to get the ball-bearing rolling, again after a devastating fire last summer destroyed the former Catholic church where it was located.

When flames were stretching as high as the steeple at the former St. Liborius Catholic Church on the morning of June 29, it seemed like the end had arrived for the skate park.

But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Sk8 Liborius could be back in the business of serving St. Louis youth.

Sk8 Liborius co-founder Dave Blum took a 5 On Your Side reporter on a tour of the main sanctuary of the former church, where the skateboard ramps had been located for 10 years. He said architects and engineers have told him the building still has good bones and could be restored to some extent.

“So, basically, we’re going to talk about what we’re going to do with all this," Blum said. "We have an engineering assessment done, saying the masonry is in pretty good shape. The next thing is - what’s the next step? What do we do with this space? We’ve heard everything from putting a roof back on it to taking walls down and building a large outdoor park to keeping the tower and everything in between.”

The brainstorming meeting, or design charrette, as Blum calls it, is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at The Kre8 Place, located at 3546 South Grand.
