ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis mom is taking her fight against crime to a whole new level after losing her son to violence.

Jaz Granderson's mom still has a hard time talking about the football coach's murder at the hands of carjackers, but she wants to toughen the legal system to make sure it doesn't happen to another family.

"It's emotional talking about it, but I'm as much of a fighter as you can get,” Reign Harris told 5 On Your Side.

She's turning that fight into a run for the Missouri House of Representatives.

She said she wants to toughen state laws to make the streets safer.

"Carjacking is happening so rampantly right now. I'm almost petrified about what's going to transpire this summer,” she said.

Missouri has no specific carjacking law. The crime falls under stealing, robbery or tampering depending on the case.

"There's no consequences to their actions and they just feel like it's a slap on the wrist,” she said.

Harris ran for alderwoman of her district last year and lost. She said now she’s aiming for higher office to help more people.

"Making it better so that another set of parents don't have to do the same thing in burying their child,” she said.

Harris is running as a Democrat in the 79th district. She faces three Democratic challengers: Lakeysha Bosley, JP Johnson, and Maxine Johnson.

Dan Elder, a Libertarian, is also running for the seat.
