SLMPD detective shot while sitting in vehicle in south St. Louis

A 25-year veteran of the force is now recovering at SLU hospital in St. Louis.

A 54-year old detective with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is recovering after being shot while sitting in his car in south St. Louis early Thursday morning.

The detective was part of a stolen vehicle investigation near Cherokee and Jefferson when the shooting occurred around 1:20 a.m.

He has not been identified, but interim police chief O’Toole says he’s a 25-year veteran with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. It’s unclear what led up to the shooting. The officer did not fire his weapon.

The officer was transported to St. Louis University Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

A 35-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning. Police say they're still searching for other suspects.

An investigation is ongoing.
