Small town raffle becomes gigantic jackpot

“It started out to be something small, just to bring in a few bucks to update the Legion, support the veterans better,” said Vietnam Army veteran Roger Kramm, “and it just kept mushrooming and mushrooming.” The prize is up to about $250,000.

Wednesday evening, a lucky raffle jackpot winner could win around $250,000 at American Legion Post 110 in Nashville, Illinois.

What began last January as a modest American Legion fundraiser could lead to a very Merry Christmas for the winner.

“It started out to be something small, just to bring in a few bucks to update the Legion, support the veterans better,” said Vietnam Army veteran Roger Kramm, “and it just kept mushrooming and mushrooming.”

Kramm said the raffle jackpot is the talk of the town with 3,300 residents.

“You get a few phone calls on it, it’s on the internet. Yes, they are talking about it,” said Kramm.

Brittany Smith traveled 20 miles from New Baden, IL to buy raffle tickets for another American Legion group.

“We pooled our money together,” said Smith. “We’ve got about 250 tickets we’re entering and then we’ll split it. Oh, yeah, we’re hoping to win that $250,000.”

Smith said her winnings might take her to Hawaii.

“I don’t feel lucky but I sure can dream,” she said.

The drawing takes place Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Kramm said to win the entire pot, the winner has be present. If your winning number is pulled but you’re not there, you keep half the pot, which would be over $100,000. Post 110 is located at 533 E. Legion Street in Nashville, IL.
