Three St. Charles County libraries are no longer facing closure

The board considered closing the libraries in May, but after pushback from communities and city councils, they are now ending all discussion on the original plan.

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — St. Charles County will keep three of its libraries that were facing possible closure.

In May, the St. Charles County City-County Library Board was considering the closures due to financial strain. In a statement this Thursday, President Stacia Alvarez said the Board voted in June to permanently end consideration of the initial proposal.

"What hasn’t changed is the Board’s commitment to secure the Library’s long-term financial stability and success," Alvarez said. "The Board continues to gather and consider information as we move through this process."

Alvarez added that "at our work session on Tuesday, the Board requested additional financial information to make decisions about operating expenses like staff pay and to create a more definitive and solid long-term plan for the Library District’s investment in capital projects." She also said the Board is working on better ways to gather public feedback.

The original plan lead to pushback from the community and city councils. The board tabled the proposal in June.
