Fatal crash leaves 1 dead in north St. Louis County

Police are actively investigating the scene of the crash, temporarily blocking off the street.

FLORISSANT, Mo. — Police are investigating a fatal car crash that happened on Saturday evening at the intersection of New Castle Drive and New Halls Ferry Road in north St. Louis County.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said it all started when a truck traveled into oncoming traffic hitting another truck and killing the driver.

"It's just a bad scene," Edward Johnson, who lives nearby, said. "Makes you sad just looking at it."

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, police responded to a two-car crash at New Halls Ferry Road between New Castle Drive and North Lindbergh Boulevard in Florissant around 3 p.m. Saturday.

The MSHP's latest report added this all started when a car driven by 55-year-old Virgil Shivers went into on-coming traffic and hit Gary Bozeman's car head-on.

The 71-year-old Bozeman died. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Shivers was taken to a local hospital.

When 5 On Your Side news crews arrived on the scene, it was clear a white car was overturned on the sidewalk of the street. The other car involved was also along the road without its front bumper.

Police did not say what led to or caused the crash. Police are actively investigating this crash. They temporarily blocked off the street early Saturday evening.

Neighbors in North St. Louis County told 5 On Your Side that they heard what sounded like an explosion outside their front door a little after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hours later, on-lookers were upset with the lack of medical first responders present.

"I just wonder how come they haven't sent for emergency services," Johnson said. "Not an ambulance or a fire department out here at all."

By 5:30 p.m. one of the trucks was finally being flipped over.

Reminding drivers to "keep your eyes open and pay attention to what you're doing," Melvin Taylor, who lives near New Castle Drive, said.

"Mostly watch these other drivers because there's a lot of them out here that aren't paying attention to what they're doing," Taylor added.

For about 20 years, Taylor has driven through this intersection every day, warning that speeding drivers make it very dangerous.
