FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. — The Humane Society of Missouri rescued 36 chihuahuas from a property in Franklin County Thursday and are heading to St. Louis for treatment.

In a press release, the Humane Society said their animal cruelty task force was called by a concerned citizen who reported that the dogs were living on a hoarder property in Franklin County. The task force worked with local law enforcement to get onto the property, where they found the 36 dogs suffering from various health conditions.

The press release said the rescue was challenging because the dogs were allowed to roam free on the property and were fearful of human interaction.

The press release said the property owner was recently admitted to a nursing home due to worsening health issues. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office contacted the owner, who agreed to surrender the animals.

“We’re grateful to the concerned citizen who contacted us on behalf of these poor animals, who can’t speak for themselves,” HSMO President Kathy Warnick said in the press release. “The conditions at this property were horrible for any living creature to have to endure."

To report an animal that may be in danger or is suffering from neglect or abuse, call the local police and the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Hotline at 314-647-4400.

The release said the dogs will need to recover physically and behaviorally before being made available for adoption. They will receive treatment at the Humane Society's Macklind headquarters.
