Rock slams onto car on I-64, St. Louis driver forced to pay hundreds

Just last year, 5 On Your Side reported on multiple incidents like this.

ST. LOUIS — A spider crack now stretches across Jonah Munzer's windshield.

A drive on Interstate 64 near the Hampton Avenue exit on Friday was cut short after Munzer's car was hit by a large rock, costing him hundreds in repairs.

Munzer said he left St. Charles and was driving to his St. Louis home when the incident happened.

"I was driving home eastbound on 64. Clear night, there weren't many cars around me and as I was driving under the Hampton bridge is when the rock fell or was thrown," Munzer added. "This car has been in my family forever!"

The sudden impact startled him.

"The first thing I heard was a loud pop, it almost sounded like a gunshot. I thought it was a gunshot, maybe a stray bullet came through, so I checked myself."

An uninjured Munzer then pulled over and called St. Louis police to make a report.

"They said it could be someone threw a rock or it could've been the bridge crumbling," he said. "If it's a crumbling bridge, that's upsetting, we need to get folks out there for bridge repairs."

While he hopes any rock throwers are brought to justice, his main focus is now on paying for the problem.

"After that conversation with my insurance company, we found out paying out of pocket is cheaper. I'm paying $460 out of pocket, an expense not small but I was not looking forward to spending this summer," Munzer said.

Munzer is still grateful. He knows it could have been more damaging, caused him to crash, or injured someone else. He's just grateful he called police when he did.

"[Police] can get an accurate time frame in the moment and send a little patrol to check out the bridge, that’s what I would’ve done different knowing what I know now," he said. "Definitely be vigilant out there!"

As for his car, it may need a facelift, but it's a keeper.

"I'm going to plan on driving it forever," Munzer said.

MoDOT told 5 On Your Side it has no reports of anything falling from the bridge. Just last year, 5 On Your Side reported on multiple incidents like this. In March 2023, a man was arrested for throwing rocks at cars on Interstate 64.
