KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A St. Louis man who was caught in Kansas City moving 31 pounds of meth on a bus from Los Angeles in 2019 has been sentenced to 20 years.

Cregg L. Matthews, 56, will serve 20 years in federal prison without parole, a written statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Western District of Missouri said.

When Matthews arrived in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 19, 2019, investigators were waiting for him.

"Law enforcement officers at the bus station used a service K-9 to check the luggage under the bus in the luggage bins," the written statement said. "After the bus arrived and the passengers were off the bus, a police service K-9 alerted to a suitcase with Matthews’s name on it."

The K-9 also alerted police of potential drugs in the bag Matthew was carrying. Investigators found 10 pounds of meth in the bag Matthew had and 21.6 more pounds in the suitcase with Matthews's name on it.

This happened a year after Matthews was discharged from parole that came after a 10-year prison sentence for having and intending to distribute cocaine.

The case was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Missouri Western Interdiction and Narcotics Task Force, and the DEA.

Matthews was found guilty of having and intending to distribute the meth in July of 2023. He was sentenced as a career offender due to his prior felony convictions.
