St. Louis region honors 9/11 with ceremonies, acts of service

Here are some of the memorial events taking place throughout the St. Louis region.

ST. LOUIS — Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, making it the deadliest terror attack ever to occur on U.S. soil.

Across the nation, Americans are commemorating 9/11, also known as Patriot Day, with ceremonies and acts of service. 

Here are some of the events taking place throughout the St. Louis region.

Scott Air Force Base 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

  • Where: 375th Air Mobility Wing Headquarters at Scott Air Force Base, South Drive, Scott AFB, IL 62225.
  • When: 7:40 a.m. Wednesday.
  • The event will consist of a reveille with the Honor Guard of firefighters and security forces members, a chaplain invocation, a wreath-laying and a bell-ringing.

9/11 Day of Service

O'Fallon 9/11 Ceremony and Walk

  • Where: O’Fallon Municipal Centre, 100 South Main St., O’Fallon, MO 63366.
  • When: 9 a.m. Wednesday.
  • The annual 9/11 Patriot Ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre’s 9/11 memorial. Following the ceremony will be a 1-mile walk along Main Street to reflect.

National Day of Service & Remembrance

  • Where: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis, MO 63125.
  • When: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
  • The public was invited to volunteer at the national cemetery to beautify the grounds by cleaning headstones. People who were interested in helping were asked to dress for the weather in casual but respectful attire. Participants should not wear open toed shoes or tank tops.

Patriot Day BBQ

  • Where: Bernard Middle School, 1054 Forder Road, St. Louis, MO 63129.
  • When: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Bernard Middle School has invited police, fire, EMS personnel, members of the military and veterans to enjoy free lunch. The barbecue will be held just outside of the school's front entrance.

Manchester 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

  • Where: Margaret Stoecker Park, 222 Henry Ave., Manchester, MO 63011.
  • When: 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Krista Salvatore, a 9/11 survivor, will share her experience escaping from the South Tower of the World Trader Center. There will also be a Memorial Table ceremony, live music and a "Flags of Valor" display honoring first responders who died in the attacks and from 9/11-related illnesses. There are a total of nine memorials dedicated to the tragedy of 9/11 around the Bi-State that are registered with the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. 

The memorials locations include the following: 

  • St. Louis' Sole Provider sculpture at Missouri Botanical Garden
  • Belleville's September 11 Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois 
  • O'Fallon's Tribute to First Responders 
  • Swansea's Melvin Price Memorial Park
  • Edwardsville's Holiday Shores Fire Department
  • Fenton's Heroes Memorial
  • Franklin Court Courthouse Memorial stone
  • St. Louis' Bell Avenue Community Garden
