St. Louis Public Schools board member calls for accountability

Emily Hubbard called for board leaders to step down. The superintendent was placed on a leave of absence last month.

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis Public Schools board member posted on social media Saturday, calling for accountability.

Emily Hubbard called for the board's President and Vice President to step down. Tensions have been building for days after Superintendent Keisha Scarlett was placed on temporary leave.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones called for a state audit on Friday over how the district is spending its money. Jones says the district started the school year with a surplus of $17 million. There is now a projected deficit of $35 million.

Jones also calls into question top-level hires Superintendent Keisha Scarlett brought in from Washington state.

One of those hires is the woman now tasked with overseeing the district—Millicent Borishade—who received a vote of no confidence from a teacher's union in Washington, 5 On Your Side has learned.

"They have a lot of confidence building to do," Dr. Gerry Kettenbach, an education consultant, told 5 On Your Side. "They have a lot of trust-building to do."

Dr. Kettenbach said there is an opportunity for growth in crisis.

Board President Toni  Cousins and Vice President Matt Davis said their focus is preparing the district for the first day of school which is August 19.
