Grandparents disagree after St. Louis police classify 15-year-old's shooting death as accidental

"This is hard on us. Dalton did not shoot himself in the back of his head," Dawn Koster said.

ST. LOUIS — "Dalton was an energetic kid. He was a good person," said Dawn Koster, the boy's grandmother.

A devastated Koster and her husband, Matthew, have many questions after the sudden death of their 15-year-old grandson, Dalton Piatchek.

"We haven't gotten one call from the police," said Dawn Koster.

Police said last Thursday afternoon they went to a home on Missouri Avenue in south city to investigate a shooting.

Witnesses told police Dalton was trying to load a gun when it fired and a bullet struck him.

The ninth grader died at a hospital.

His maternal grandparents said at the time of the shooting, a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy were also inside the home.

The couple also said the grandmother of Dalton's cousin lives at the home.

"The boy dropped his phone and his ID and ran. The girl stayed around and was taken into custody. From what I understand, they did not find the 17-year-old boy," Dawn Koster said.

Evita Caldwell, a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, sent 5 On Your Side an email saying more than a week later, "that incident is still being handled as an accidental shooting."

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.

"It wasn't an accidental shooting. Dalton was shot in the back of the head. Dalton couldn't bend his arm to shoot himself," said the boy's grandmother.

That's because she said at the time, her grandson, who was shot on the right side of his head, was recovering from a broken right elbow.

"The doctor said that it wasn't accidental and it wasn't self-inflicted," said Dawn Koster.

"We have not gotten a medical examiner's report. This is what the physician told me on arrival at the hospital," said Matthew Koster, Dalton's grandfather.

On February 10th, the family will gather for a memorial and honor Dalton. His grandparents say they won't stop until they get the answers they're looking for.

"If we don't start hearing from the police, then I'm going to turn it over to my attorney. I will keep fighting for Dalton," added the boy's grandmother.
