ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A St. Louis woman shot at a post office Tuesday morning in St. Louis County and then called authorities to report the crime, according to police.

Marlisha Gatewood, 36, opened fire at the post office at 9810 Halls Ferry Road, according to criminal charges issued Tuesday by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Officers with the St. Louis County Police Department were sent to the post office around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday after reports of a shooting. Investigators discovered that Gatewood was the person who reported the shooting.

She also told 911 dispatchers that she left the gun on the sidewalk, police said.

Officers sent to investigate the shooting saw Gatewood near the post office's exterior. They also found a .22 caliber pistol on a nearby sidewalk.

According to a written release from police, officers saw a circular defect in one of the post office's windows. Near the window was a spent shell casing and multiple live bullets on the ground.

"(Gatewood) admitted to shooting the Postal Office building," the release said. "St. Louis County Police Department North County Precinct Officers are leading this investigation."

Gatewood was taken into custody and was charged with a single count of unlawful use of a weapon. Her bond was set at $100,000, cash only.

Police did not elaborate on why Gatewood shot at the post office or why she remained at the scene.
