If it's true that home is where the heart is, Meghan's has a gaping hole.
"It’s indescribable," said Meghan Panu.
Only bricks and boards remain where Meghan's tiny house was sitting on Michigan Avenue in South City. She was gradually building the Tiny House, piece by piece.
"It’s not just a trailer that was stolen, or car, it’s an actual home," she said.
Her little dream came with a big obstacle - she's never done anything quite like this.
"Really challenging myself and making myself uncomfortable because this was something that was completely, at the time, so unfamiliar to me," said Panu.
So over the last two years, with the help of friends, she's been building her dream home.
The owner of Refab agreed to let her park it on the street. She was preparing to move it to a lot she had picked out, when she got a call Saturday morning.
"He asked if I had moved the tiny house overnight and when I said no, he had the unfortunate news that they hadn’t, and it was likely taken," she said.
Meghan turned to social media in hopes somebody would spot her home on the move.
"Surely somebody is going to see this thing and call in and report it," said Panu.
Saturday night, came a potential lead. At least two reports of her home spotted on I-70 near Kansas City.
"It just makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up," she said.
So now, all she can do is wait and hope for her "heart" to come back home.
"It’s a great loss without it," said Panu.
Panu says it was difficult to get her home insured because most insurance companies struggle to classify what it should fall under.
She also says she had a trailer lock on it, but the crooks must have bypassed it somehow.
