ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, Mo. — A standoff has Wednesday evening in St. Francois County south of Farmington after a person fired several shots when police arrived to serve a 96-hour commitment.

The standoff ended at around 7:30 p.m. when the suspect was taken into custody by the Missouri State Highway Patrol SWAT unit without further incident.

The St. Francois County Sheriff's Office said the individual was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Officers had gone to the home on the 2500 block of Missouri State Route OO to serve a civil involuntary detention to a person "in need of mental health services."

The person fired several shots from the home and then refused to communicate with officers. No one was struck by the gunfire, the sheriff's office said.

The MSHP's SWAT unit and negotiators responded to the scene. The St. Francois County Ambulance District, Farmington Fire Department and Farmington Police Department assisted as well.

Missouri has the authority to allow involuntary treatment of a person with a mental disorder or illness under certain conditions and with appropriate due process, according to the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
