RIVERVIEW, Mo. — A vehicle fire on eastbound Interstate 270 backed up traffic Tuesday evening on the Chain of Rocks Bridge.

North County Fire & Rescue chief Keith Goldstein said a passenger car on the Illinois side of I-270 hit some debris on the road, which flung into the tractor-trailer. The debris struck the fuel tank, causing it to rupture and engulf the tractor-trailer in flames.

Goldstein said it took about an hour to put out the fire, with St. Louis City, St. Louis County and Illinois side fire departments assisting. He said many units were needed since there isn't water access on the highway.

Eastbound traffic going towards Illinois was at a standstill starting at around 6:00 p.m. and was backed up all the way to Bellefontaine Road. As of 8:30 p.m. traffic has resumed slowly.

Goldstein said there was no one seriously hurt in the initial crash. The incident caused at least one other crash, Goldstein said, but he could not confirm whether there were any further injuries.
