There are new details about a deadly fire that claimed two lives this weekend.
Family members tell us neighbors tried to pull the men from the burning house. But they were too late.
The men inside were cousins, and one of those men- Anthony Shields, 49, was confined to a wheelchair when the fire broke out.
Shields and his cousin Louis Mcdowell were staying in the foreclosed home on Calvin Avenue, which family members tell us used to belong to a relative.
The family says there were no working smoke detectors in the home. Shields was a paraplegic, confined to a wheelchair, and Mcdowell reportedly took care of his cousin year round.
Family members told us that neighbors tried to lift shields through a window but couldn’t' get him through.
“I'm pretty sure [Anthony] weighed too much for the neighbors to get him out of the house because it's like dead weight. So they tried to get him out. But my other cousin. I'm under the impression, I don't know how... his body was in the front of the house and his body was unrecognizable,” said Barbara Thurmon, Shield’s sister.
There's no word yet on a cause for the fire. The County Bomb and Arson are investigating the incident with Country Club Hills police department.
