ST. LOUIS — United States Steel Corp. isn't sure yet when its only operating furnace at the Granite City Works in St. Louis' Metro East would return to operation.

U.S. Steel (NYSE: X) temporarily idled furnace B at the plant Sept. 18 in response to the beginning, three days earlier, of the United Auto Workers strike against Ford, Stellantis and General Motors. The strike recently passed the three-month mark, leaving manufacturers like U.S. Steel with lower demand for the steel that goes into the Detroit 3's cars and trucks. Ford reached a tentative agreement Oct. 25 with the UAW, and on Sunday, the auto workers and Stellantis said they also had reached a tentative deal. Both deals are pending ratification by union members, and General Motors hasn't yet struck an agreement, so it's not clear if recent moves will be able to get Granite City's idled furnace going again.

Hundreds of workers have been laid off.
