St. Louis County early voters take pride in high turnout

Volunteer Election Judge Allison Gorga noted the high turnout and offered tips for those planning to vote on Election Day.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — On Saturday, long lines wrapped around early voting sites across the St. Louis area.

"I'm afraid that it would be even longer if I waited until Tuesday," said one woman.

Three days before Election Day, crowds wrapped around St. Louis County Grant's View Library branch to cast their ballot early.

A county website that displays a current count of people waiting to vote at each site showed more than 700 people were waiting to vote for hours Saturday morning.

“It took me one hour and 21 minutes,” shared Lisa Swyers, who was happy to wait alongside her 18-year-old sons, first-time voters Gavin and Caleb. “It makes me proud. They did their research. They know who they are voting... ."

Gavin and Caleb echoed their mother’s sentiments, expressing pride in participating in the democratic process. “I think I just want to have my voice be heard by the government. Have my vote count,” Gavin said. Caleb added, “It was just interesting to see all the different opinions of people. What people are wanting and not wanting for our country.”

Voters are focused on several key issues this election, with many highlighting Amendment 3 and the presidential race.

One voter who works in healthcare emphasized the importance of reproductive rights.

“I think it's really critical for all women," the voter who works in healthcare said. "One because we should have the right to say what we do with our bodies. That's one of the main reasons why I came here today. It’s worth it. It is."

Election Judge Allison Gorga noted the high turnout for early voting and shared insights for those planning to vote on Election Day.

“The late afternoon and evening tend to be less busy. I think people like to go to the polls before work,” she said.

For those voting absentee, Gorga advised, “If it says it's sent but not received, what we can do is in our system spoil your absentee ballot before it arrives at the county board of elections, and then we will print you a new ballot.”

The packed parking lot at the library is a promising sign of civic duty and engagement as the community prepares for a pivotal election.

Monday, Nov. 4 is the final day to cast an early vote in Missouri. Polls in St. Louis County are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Polls in St. Louis City are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
