WARREN COUNTY, Mo. — A man died while in custody Monday morning at the Warren County Jail.
According to a news release from the Warren County Sheriff's Department, 40-year-old James Haverstick of Warrenton was found unresponsive in his bunk early Monday morning. Paramedics pronounced him dead shortly before 1 a.m.
Jail staff said they last saw Haverstick at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. He was later shown on surveillance video walking to his bunk, interacting with other inmates, watching TV and lying down in his bed at about 10:50 p.m., according to the sheriff's department.
Knowing Haverstick normally snored loudly in his sleep, a fellow inmate got up to check on him shortly after midnight when he didn't hear any noise. That's when the inmate called for jail staff, who began life-saving efforts until medical personnel arrived, according to the department.
The inmate was taken to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy and toxicology report.
According to Missouri Courts, Haverstick was set to have a jury trial on Feb. 20 for a first-degree burglary charge originally filed back in 2021.
On Oct. 20, 2021, Haverick allegedly went behind the counter at a Mobil gas station on North Highway 47 and took about $20 in coins from the register before running out of the store, the Warren County Record reported shortly after the burglary.
