ST. LOUIS — There was unexpected entrance to an annual Greek festival on Monday following a water main break on Forest Park Parkway in the Central West End.
The water main break sent water gushing down the street, but not even a river of water could wash away the excitement at the St. Nicholas Greek Festival.
The festival started as a church picnic over one hundred years ago and turned into a celebration with thousands of people in the Central West End. They still showed up to enjoy food, music, and celebrate Greek heritage.
The water main break didn't come without disappointment for people like Erin Ospina.
“It's ridiculous. I'm kind of disappointed seeing it, especially as we walk up to the festival. I feel like it's kind of ruining the mood, the vibe for everybody," said Ospina.
Ryan Liberati said it’s also a big inconvenience.
“It's blocking up traffic. It's like, diverting everything, like, what's the city going to do about this? And, like, what's going on?” he said.
The city told us it won’t be able to repair the break until Tuesday because of the celebration.
"That's got to be be gallons of gallons. I can't imagine how much water that's going to cost the city, the community," said Ospina.
Despite the inconvenience, festival-goers have made the best out of a wet situation. There's no word yet on what caused the water main break.
