Well-known St. Louisan helping entrepreneurs impacted by TechShop bankruptcy

Jim McKelvey, the co-founder of Square and Third Degree Glass Factory, is helping find new space for startup companies impacted by TechShop suddenly closing its doors at Cortex.

ST. LOUIS - Hours after TechShop announced they filed for bankruptcy and were immediately closing its workspace at Cortex, well-known St. Louisan Jim McKelvey offered to help.

Dennis Lower, President and CEO of Cortex, said McKelvey and others helped develop a plan to assist entrepreneurs impacted by TechShop closing.

TechShop was a makerspace that offered office space and tools to help entrepreneurs and startup companies develop prototypes and launch businesses.

"Less than 12 hours after the announcement, we already had identified interested community folks who wanted to rally around the goodness that was happening in TechShop and how the maker community could be continued elsewhere in the surrounding neighborhood," Lower said.

Lower said Cortex is able to keep TechShop open through the end of the year. McKelvey's Third Degree Glass Factory is helping find a permanent space moving forward.

Some details are expected to be released Monday evening at 5 p.m. at Venture Cafe located in the Cortex district.
