Wildwood home significantly damaged by Thursday morning fire

The homeowners were alerted by their smoke detectors and were able to make it out of the home safely.

WILDWOOD, Mo. — A home in Wildwood, Missouri, was significantly damaged by a fire Thursday morning.

Cpt. Matt Coppin, the public information officer with the Metro West Fire Protection District, said the fire was at a home on Sundance Court. He said the fire started in the garage and spread to the home.

Coppin said the homeowners were alerted by their smoke detectors and were able to make it out of the home unharmed. They were the ones to call 911 after getting out of the home.

There were also no firefighter injuries reported.

Video from the scene showed that the garage was destroyed with two cars inside. The fire also burned through the roof of the attached home, video showed.

A house fire at a home in Wildwood destroyed the home's garage and caused significant damage to the rest of the home.

Coppin said the home is in a more rural part of St. Louis County, which provided its own challenges.

"In this part of the county, we don't have a lot of fire hydrants, so water supply is an issue," he said. "But what we practice and train for is shuttling water into these areas, so that's why you see extra fire trucks here this morning."

In addition to limited fire hydrants, he said long, skinny driveways can slow the process as well.

Crews from multiple nearby districts responded to help with shuttling water.

Coppin said he did not know if the home was a total loss, but said it sustained serious damage.
