ROXANA, Ill — Preliminary autopsy results show a woman and her 7-year-old son who were found dead inside a car that was pulled from pond in Roxana on Tuesday night died from drowning, The Madison County Coroner's Office said.
The office made the announcement on Thursday.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the two were inside a car that was submerged into a pond near Wanda Road and Wagon Wheel Road.
The woman has been identified as 34-year-old Ashly Maynard and 7-year-old Vincent.
The car was pulled out of the pond Wednesday morning.
Lt. Brian Korberna said there were no signs of foul play and no indication of a murder-suicide. The incident remains under investigation, but it appears accidental.
The autopsies showed no evidence of trauma, the coroner's office said, and Ashly Maynard's autopsy showed no evidence of a medical event that would have led to the incident.
No final determination will be made until the completion of routine toxicology results.
‘I truly appreciate the fact that a witness stopped and called us,’ Korberna said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
Korberna called the incident 'truly tragic.'
The superintendent of the Edwardsville School District released the following statement:
“District 7 is saddened by the news of this tragedy. Vince was a first grade student at LeClaire Elementary. We have qualified staff available for those students and staff in need of support. We extend our sincerest condolences to Vince’s family and friends.”
