Woman killed at Forest Park MetroLink station remains unidentified

Though a suspect is in custody, police have yet to name her or the victim, who is currently listed as a Jane Doe.

ST. LOUIS — A woman is dead and a teenage girl is in custody after a fatal shooting at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Metrolink station.

Though a suspect is in custody, police have yet to name her or the victim, who is currently listed as a Jane Doe.

However, a St. Louis police spokesperson told 5 On Your Side in the past year there have been 257 calls for service at that location, about a third of which were called in by officers.

At the DeBaliviere-Forest Park Metro Link stop, things were quiet Monday, but it was a much different scene Saturday afternoon.

"I'm tired of violence,” a man who only identified himself as True said. “I've been seeing violence my whole life. I'm just really tired of it.”

True said the shooting that left a woman dead and a 17-year-old in custody hits close to home because he knew both women.

"They was friends once upon a time,” True said. “They actually got into it over some clothes."

"Whether it's a 17-year-old or a 37-year-old it's a tragedy,” attorney Greg Smith said. “It's something we see all too much in St. Louis these days. Unfortunately, we're seeing it more amongst juveniles."

The 17-year-old suspect is currently facing charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action, but defense attorney Greg Smith said it’s not clear if she will be tried as a juvenile or an adult.

"What courts are concerned with if it's a child or an adult is recidivism,” Smith said. “Is this child going to reoffend? Is this adult going to reoffend? What we have to look at is concerning."

Before making that determination investigators often look at a suspect’s grades, school record and criminal history and interview their parents.

"Generally, in a certification hearing you want to know what happened, or what is alleged to have happened, so that can cause delays,” Smith said. “You can get a certification hearing within a couple of months or six, seven, eight months. It really depends on the case."

True said he's looking forward to a day when incidents like this aren't common in St. Louis.

"I'm just ready for it all to stop,” True said.

Police were able to make a quick arrest in this case thanks to the cameras on the platform which helped identify the suspect.

As for the victim, all police could confirm was that she is either in her late teens or early 20s.
