ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A St. Louis County man is facing charges for felony animal abuse for severely beating a puppy.

According to court documents, 33-year-old Cartez Spriggs was charged on Friday. Riverview police and a St. Louis County animal control officer were called to his home on July 11 for a report of a man beating a dog with a hockey stick.

Officers found a hockey stick in the front yard with what appeared to be blood. Spriggs was arrested. Police found a 4-month-old brown and white puppy bleeding from its mouth and in a pool of blood. The puppy was taken to an animal hospital and rendered comatose from its injuries, police said.

Spriggs admitted to police that he raised the puppy above his head and let it drop to the ground and then hit it multiple times with a hockey stick. He said he was unsure how many times he had hit the puppy due to blacking out with rage. Spriggs blamed ‘stress’ for the incident and said he had been considering harming someone or something for ‘some time.’
