WASHINGTON (AP) — Tanner Roark struck out a career-high 15 and allowed only two hits over seven innings in a dominating performance that carried the Washington Nationals past the Minnesota Twins 2-0 Saturday.
Roark and a trio of relievers combined to fan 18, the most by Washington since its arrival from Montreal in 2005.
Roark (2-2) twice struck out the side and fanned at least two in four other innings. It was only the second time in 52 career starts that the right-hander reached double digits in strikeouts — the other was on July 6, 2014, when he fanned 11 at San Diego.
Jonathan Papelbon got three outs to complete the combined two-hitter and earn his seventh save.
Ryan Zimmerman drove in two runs and Bryce Harper had a pair of doubles for the Nationals, whose 13-4 start under new manager Dusty Baker matches the 1981 Expos and 2012 Nats for the best in franchise history.
Phil Hughes (1-3) took the loss.
REDS 13, CUBS 5
CINCINNATI (AP) — Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall hit three-run homers in the sixth inning as Cincinnati finally broke through against Chicago's dominant pitching.
A victory would have given the Cubs (13-5) their best start since 1907, the year they won the first of their back-to-back World Series titles. A four-homer splurge ended Chicago's domination of its NL Central rival.
This series opened with Jake Arrieta's second career no-hitter in a 16-0 win Thursday night. Jon Lester kept it going, throttling the Reds in an 8-1 victory the following night. John Lackey couldn't hold a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on Saturday night.
Suarez's homer off Lackey (3-1) put the Reds up 5-3 and started a seven-run inning. Duvall connected off Trevor Cahill, and Scott Schebler followed with a solo homer. The Reds hadn't hit three homers in an inning since 2012.
CARDINALS 11, PADRES 2
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie Aledmys Diaz had his first five-hit game, Jedd Gyorko and Jeremy Hazelbaker hit three-run homers and St. Louis beat San Diego.
Diaz had a two-run double in the ninth, while Gyorko homered off his old team and Hazelbaker snapped an 0-for-17 slump. Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty each had three hits, and Piscotty hit a solo homer in the sixth.
Gyorko and Hazelbaker homered off Carlos Villanueva, who pitched for the Cardinals last year before signing with the Padres as a free agent.
Michael Wacha (2-0) and three relievers combined on a four-hitter.
Kevin Quackenbush (1-1) allowed two runs and one hit in 1 1/3 innings for the loss.
GIANTS 7, MARLINS 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jake Peavy pitched seven innings for his first win and added a two-run single off Miami ace Jose Fernandez.
Gregor Blanco tripled twice and scored two runs while Matt Duffy had three hits and scored for the Giants, who have won two straight following a five-game losing streak.
Peavy (1-1) failed to get past the fifth inning in his three previous starts and had another up-and-down outing against the Marlins before finishing strong to end his skid.
Miami had runners on base in each of the first six innings but Peavy repeatedly pitched out of trouble while giving up seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Fernandez (1-2) allowed four runs over six innings in his first career start at AT&T Park.
DIAMONDBACKS 7, PIRATES 1
PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Herrmann drove in four runs with a home run and double, Rubby De La Rosa gave up three hits over six-plus innings, and Arizona beat Pittsburgh.
Herrmann, the backup catcher who was 1 for 20 at the plate entering the game, doubled in a run in the second and hit a three-run homer off A.J. Schugel in Arizona's five-run eighth. The four RBIs tied Herrmann's career high.
De La Rosa (2-3), whose previous two appearances were out of the bullpen, didn't allow a hit after Sean Rodriguez's home run with two outs in the second inning until Gregory Polanco's infield single to start the seventh.
David Peralta homered for the second straight night, a solo shot off Juan Nicasio (2-2), to put the Diamondbacks up 2-1 in the third. Nicasio gave up two runs on just three hits in six innings.
DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 1
DENVER (AP) — Kenta Maeda held Colorado hitless into the sixth inning and A.J. Ellis lined a two-run homer in Los Angeles' win.
Maeda (3-0) allowed three hits — all in the sixth — no runs and struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings as the right-hander from Japan lowered his ERA to 0.36.
With a wind-up reminiscent of countryman Hideo Nomo, Maeda was cruising along until one out in the sixth when DJ LeMahieu singled for Colorado's first hit. Nomo remains the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter at Coors Field — on Sept. 17, 1996.
Ellis hit his first homer of the season in the second to help the Dodgers end a five-game slide in Denver. Kenley Jansen threw a perfect ninth for his eighth save.
Tyler Chatwood (2-2) allowed three runs before exiting after the fourth with an elevated pitch count.
ANGELS 4, MARINERS 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a home run against Felix Hernandez, Cliff Pennington also homered, and Los Angeles beat Seattle.
Nelson Cruz put Seattle ahead 2-1 in the sixth with his second homer in two nights after an eight-game drought. But Trout responded in the bottom half when he drove a 1-0 pitch to center field after a leadoff single by Rafael Ortega. It was Trout's third homer of the season and fifth of his career against Hernandez (1-2).
Trout, the 2014 AL MVP, entered the game with a .354 career average against the 2010 AL MVP — the highest by any player with at least 50 at-bats against Hernandez.
Hector Santiago (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings and struck out seven.
Huston Street got his fifth save in five chances.
YANKEES 3, RAYS 2
NEW YORK (AP) — Brett Gardner hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give New York a victory over Tampa Bay, spoiling the impressive major league debut of Rays top pitching prospect Blake Snell.
Gardner singled home the tying run in the seventh and then connected on a 3-1 pitch from Erasmo Ramirez (4-1) two innings later, pointing toward the Yankees' dugout as he trotted to first base and the ball soared into the second deck in right field.
Andrew Miller (1-0) worked a scoreless inning for the win, getting a double-play grounder to end the ninth.
Masahiro Tanaka gave New York seven quality innings opposite Snell, perhaps baseball's premier pitching prospect. The slim left-hander permitted one run and two hits in five innings, striking out six and walking one.
METS 8, BRAVES 2
ATLANTA (AP) — David Wright hit a two-run double, Steven Matz earned his second straight win and New York stayed hot by beating power-deprived Atlanta.
Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth against right-hander Ryan Weber. The Mets had 15 hits and have homers in eight straight games.
Matz (2-1) allowed two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. The Mets have won seven of nine, including the first two games of the series against Atlanta.
The Braves have lost four straight and were held without a homer for the 12th straight game. Atlanta is last in the majors with only three homers through 17 games — 22 fewer than the Mets. It is the team's longest drought since going 13 straight games without a homer in May 1983.
Jhoulys Chacin (0-1) allowed four runs, three earned, in 5 2/3 innings.
PHILLIES 10, BREWERS 6
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Maikel Franco hit his third homer in two days, Odubel Herrera homered and reached base five times and Philadelphia beat Milwaukee.
Franco hit his fifth homer and drove in four runs after hitting two homers in a 5-2 win over Milwaukee on Friday night.
Phillies right-hander Charlie Morton exited in the second inning after straining his left hamstring running to first on a sacrifice attempt. Brett Oberholtzer (1-0) replaced Morton.
Franco hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fourth inning off Chase Anderson (1-2).
WHITE SOX 4, RANGERS 3, 11 INNINGS
CHICAGO (AP) — Slump-ridden Jose Abreu hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, leading Chicago over Texas.
After Texas tied it in the ninth on Elvis Andrus' sacrifice fly off David Robertson, the White Sox went on to win for the fourth time in five games.
Dioner Navarro drew a leadoff walk in the 11th from Nick Martinez (0-1), the last of five Texas relievers. Austin Jackson was hit by a pitch and Adam Eaton walked to load the bases.
One out later, Abreu grounded a single to left field for the second game-ending hit of his career. He took a .180 batting average into the game.
Matt Albers (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning.
ORIOLES 8, ROYALS 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chris Davis homered and had four hits and Manny Machado extended his hitting streak to 16 games for Baltimore.
Mark Trumbo had three hits and four RBIs for the Orioles, and Tyler Wilson (1-0) won his first start this season.
Davis, who led the majors with 47 home runs last season, hit his sixth homer in the second inning and had an RBI single during the Orioles' four-run fourth. He tied a career high for hits and hiked his average from .192 to .246.
Machado singled in his first at-bat and doubled in a run in the fourth. He entered hitting an American League-leading .397.
Kris Medlen (1-1) allowed seven runs on nine hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
ASTROS 8, RED SOX 3
HOUSTON (AP) — Colby Rasmus hit a tie-breaking grand slam in the fifth inning to lead Houston over Boston and snap a four-game skid.
He drove in a fifth run with a double in Houston's three-run eighth for his most RBIs since he had six on June 2, 2011.
The game was tied a 1-1 and Clay Buchholz (0-2) had retired eight straight before walking Luis Valbuena with no outs in the fifth. George Springer singled with two outs before Buchholz plunked Carlos Correa to load the bases.
Rasmus then launched a 93 mph fastball with two strikes to the seats in right-center field for his fifth career grand slam and Houston's second this season to make it 5-1.
Mike Fiers (2-1) allowed five hits and two runs with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings for his second win in a row.
INDIANS 10, TIGERS 1
DETROIT (AP) — Corey Kluber struck out 10 over eight impressive innings, Yan Gomes homered and drove in five runs for Cleveland in the rout.
Kluber (1-3) happily accepted the offensive output to earn his first win of the season. The 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner, who went 9-16 last year, gave up two hits and no walks in eight innings.
Kluber had gotten just three runs of support in his first three starts. This was his fifth game with at least 10 strikeouts and zero walks since the start of the 2014 season — only Clayton Kershaw (8) and Max Scherzer (6) have more.
Gomes came in hitting .143 with one RBI and no extra-base hits in his last eight games. He singled home a run in the first, hit a three-run homer in the third and added an RBI double in the seventh. It was his second career five-RBI game.
Anibal Sanchez (2-2) struggled for the second straight start.
BLUE JAYS 9, ATHLETICS 3
TORONTO (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki hit two solo home runs, Josh Donaldson added a three-run blast and Toronto snapped Oakland's six-game winning streak.
J.A. Happ (3-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings to win his third straight start.
Ezequiel Carrera had the first four-hit game of his career and scored three times for the Blue Jays. He also made a pair of diving catches in left, one on Chris Coghlan in the fifth and another on Khris Davis in the ninth.
Mark Canha homered for the Athletics, whose seven-game road winning streak ended.
Tulowitzki homered to begin the fifth and seventh innings, the 12th multihomer game of his career.
