Chevrolet Cruze will cruise to 42 miles per gallon

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has been certified to achieve 42 miles per gallon in highway driving by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has been certified to achieve 42 miles per gallon in highway driving by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

That rating applies to Cruze’s L, LS and LT trim levels. The top-line Cruze Premier offers an EPA-estimated 40 mpg on the highway.

The Cruze is powered by a direct-injected 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine and weighs about 250 pounds less than the model it replaces. Stop-start technology -- the ability of the engine to turn itself off at stoplights then automatically restart -- helped raise the Cruze's city driving fuel economy to 30 mpg, a 7% increase over the previous model.

“Offering a maximum highway range of up to 570 miles per tank — you can spend less time at the pump,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet Cars marketing director. “The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has more horsepower and torque, and is lighter than the previous generation making it more fun to drive.”

The new Cruze, which will arrive in dealerships soon, offers 10 standard air bags and an expanded range of optional adaptive crash-avoidance technologies, including side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist and forward collision alert.

The Cruze range expands in the fall with an all-new hatchback model and the Cruze diesel returns in early 2017.
