NEW YORK (AP) — Injured star Alex Rodriguez did light running drills at Yankee Stadium on Thursday as he keeps working his way back from a strained right hamstring that put him on the 15-day disabled list.

Rodriguez went through the workout before New York hosted Kansas City.

The 40-year-old designated hitter went on the DL on May 4 and there were concerns he might be out of action longer than the two weeks. General manager Brian Cashman said the team is "encouraged" by his progress, but that it's "too early to call" whether Rodriguez will be ready to activated when eligible.

Rodriguez is off to a slow start this season, batting .194 with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 72 at-bats. Several of his teammates have been dealt with slumps and injuries, part of the reason the Yankees are last in AL East.

"It's always tough to be out," Rodriguez said. "It's always tough to watch."
