PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Jon Jay homered twice and secured the leadoff spot in San Diego's lineup and Colin Rea labored through five innings in the Padres' 11-9 spring victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.
Jay, acquired from St. Louis in an offseason trade to play center field, hit an opposite-field homer to left and pulled a two-run shot off right-hander Ross Stripling.
"He's a guy who's going to hit leadoff opening day," Padres manager Andy Green announced after the game. "He's hopefully going to drive the train for us."
Wil Myers also hit a two-run homer off Stripling, making his first spring start.
Justin Turner belted a solo shot off Rea, contending for one of two open starting spots. The right-hander walked in a run and let another score on a wild pitch. Rea allowed three runs, five hits and five walks.
Adrian Gonzalez had two singles and reached base three times and Joc Pederson hit a three-run homer for the Dodgers, who visit San Diego in the season opener Monday.
STARTING TIME
Dodgers: Stripling, who believes he can be a starter or reliever in his comeback from Tommy John surgery, allowed five runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
"It's really my first time going through the lineup multiple times," Stripling said. "I think it kind of proved that I needed to change some stuff up. It seemed like they were hitting balls harder as the game went on."
Padres: Rea struck out six, but only 50 of his 89 pitches were strikes. Green said he remains "without question" a candidate to start.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Dodgers: Manager Dave Roberts expects C Yasmani Grandal (forearm) to be ready for opening day. . 2B Howie Kendrick (calf) likely won't be ready for the start of the season. He'll stay in Arizona after the team breaks camp and play in minor league games. . Turner left as a precaution after getting spiked at third.
Padres: RHP Jon Edwards (elbow) will start the season on the disabled list .. SS Alexei Ramirez robbed Carl Crawford of a hit on a ball up the middle after missing two days with an illness.
CRAWFORD SLUMPS
Dodgers LF Carl Crawford lined out to center in his last at-bat to finish an 0-for-4 day. The four-time All-Star struck out twice against Rea, the second on a ball in the dirt. He is hitting .171.
HUMBER RETIRES
Right-hander Philip Humber told the Padres he is retiring instead of accepting a minor league assignment.
"He knew if this wasn't his job at the major league level, he was ready," Green said.
The 33-year-old Humber threw a perfect game with the Chicago White Sox in 2012, but hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013.
FIDGETY PADRES
These are tense times for Padres outfielder Jabari Blash, a Rule 5 section from Seattle who started in right and went 0 for 2 before leaving with a sore hamstring as he awaits roster decisions.
"I wish I knew what was happening in the next couple of days," said the 6-foot-5 Blash, who has four home runs. "But it definitely makes things interesting."
Green told infielder Jemile Weeks, who doubled in a run in the sixth, that they won't determine his future until the weekend.
"He came from nowhere to roster consideration," Green said. "I wasn't expecting that."
