VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Vancouver hung on with ten men for most of the second half to salvage a 1-1 home draw against Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, keeping the gap between the MLS Western Conference contenders at two points.
The day's two other games also ended 1-1, with Eastern Conference leader Montreal getting a stoppage time goal to draw away at New York City, and Portland gifting host New England a point by netting a very late own goal.
Vancouver went ahead in the 14th minute when veteran Costa Rica international Christian Bolanos scored his first MLS goal, connecting off Cristian Techera's corner.
Sporting equalized 13 minutes later through Chile international striker Diego Rubio, who is on loan from Real Valladolid.
Vancouver went down to 10 men in the 51st minute when a poor back pass from Tim Parker forced fellow defender Kendall Waston to take down Rubio for his second yellow card.
Montreal's Dominic Oduro scored in the opening seconds of stoppage time to give the Impact a 1-1 draw at New York City.
Didier Drogba's free kick into the area found Oduro — playing at his seventh MLS club — who placed his header just inside the post.
New York City had taken the lead in the 51st minute through R.J. Allen, who began the slick movement from defense, and netted the goal.
NYC is winless in its past seven games.
Portland's own goal in the 89th minute gave New England a 1-1 home draw against the Timbers.
Femi Hollinger-Janzen appeared to have score his first MLS goal, but it was ruled that the ball went in off Portland defender Jermaine Taylor.
