The Cleveland Browns now stand with the 2008 Detroit Lions for one of the NFL's all-time woeful seasons.
The Browns wrapped up an 0-16 campaign with a 28-24 loss Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming just the second team ever to reach the mark.
Cleveland mounted a late drive and was in Pittsburgh territory in the final two minutes, but wide receiver Corey Coleman dropped what would have been a first down on fourth-and-2.
Browns coach Hue Jackson pledged before the season he would jump in Lake Erie if his team went 1-15 again. Though his team did not replicate last season's remark, he said last week he intends to fulfill his promise.
Cleveland's 1-31 mark is the worst of any two-year run in NFL history.
"I don't think anyone else could have stayed in this job for two years," Jackson said in a postgame news conference. "A lot of coaches would have said forget it."
Owner Jimmy Haslam said on Dec. 3 that Jackson will return for the 2018 season. Sashi Brown was fired as general manager at that point and replaced with former Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey.
After the game, Haslam reaffirmed his intention to keep Jackson on as coach.
Cleveland had already clinched the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL draft last week. The Browns also own the No. 4 overall pick in the first round from the Houston Texans.
