Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify before Congress in response to growing pressure from the public and lawmakers, the first time Zuckerberg has testified before Congress.

Facebook has not yet decided which congressional committees Zuckerberg will testify before, according to a person at Facebook who is familiar with his thinking but who was not authorized to discuss the plans publicly. He has been asked to testify before three committees.

Growing public anger over the leak of data from tens of millions of Facebook account to data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica, which said it helped Donald Trump get elected, has forced Zuckerberg to make an appearance on Capitol Hill.

Facebook sources told CNN Tuesday that Zuckerberg would testify within weeks. Facebook is planning a strategy for his testimony, according to the report.

Zuckerberg told CNN last week that he would be willing to testify if he was the right person.

"What we try to do is send the person at Facebook who will have the most knowledge," Zuckerberg said. "If that's me, then I am happy to go."

Zuckerberg turned down a request from British lawmakers to answer questions on the social media giant's privacy practices and will send two Facebook executives instead.
