Donald Trump issues first statement after apparent assassination attempt

Donald Trump has released a statement on social media after what law enforcement officials are treating as an apparent assassination attempt.

WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump said in a social media post he was "shot with a bullet" in the upper part of his ear during the shooting at his campaign rally Saturday in Pennsylvania

In his first statement since what law enforcement officials said was an assassination attempt, Trump thanked law enforcement and extended his condolences to the family of those hurt in the shooting.

The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement Saturday night that one spectator was killed, and two were critically injured after an attacker fired "multiple shots" at Trump's rally. Sources told the Associated Press the gunman was outside of the rally.

"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania," Trump's statement on Truth Social said. "Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so l realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"
