CROMWELL, Conn. — After Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton recently wreaked havoc down south, thousands of Americans need support, and many Connecticut residents are stepping up.
Donating to those who have been affected by the back-to-back hurricanes is a great way to help, but the Better Business Bureau Serving Connecticut recommends asking several questions before sending funds or items to the impacted areas. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance lists six specific questions to ask.
First, can the charity provide fast assistance?
The BBB encourages residents to see if the disaster relief charity has an on-the-ground presence in the areas that need assistance. If they don’t have staff there already, it may be difficult to make a quick difference. Check each charity’s website to see how they can address immediate needs.
Second, should you provide in-kind assistance?
Before donating clothing, food or other in-kind donations, the BBB recommends checking if the charity can properly distribute such aid. The BBB said to ask about their transportation and distribution plans.
Third, which emergency needs are the charity addressing?
The BBB said that many individuals in flooded areas will seek safety in shelters and need access to food and water. Charities that provide this type of relief serve a critical role in helping communities respond to natural disasters.
Fourth, what about crowdfunding requests?
It is important and safest to give to someone who is personally known and trusted when engaging in crowdfunding, according to the BBB. One should also review the platform’s policies and procedures. Keep in mind that while some crowdfunding sites go to great lengths to vet posts, others do not.
Fifth, will there be other opportunities to give?
Each disaster has both immediate and long-term needs, the BBB said. This means there will be many opportunities to help. Don’t rush to decide to donate if you haven’t properly thought it through. Following major flooding, clean up activities will present a significant challenge that will take an indefinite amount of time. Donate in a way that works both for you and the people you hope to help.
Sixth, how can you verify the charity’s trustworthiness?
The BBB recommends that residents rely on expert opinion when evaluating a charity. The BBB encourages making donations to charities that meet all 20 of the BBB Standards for Charity Accountability found at Give.org.
