(KSDK) -- "Coming home from the store I passed by and felt something was wrong and came back." When Rick Adams arrived at a home on Hyatt Court in St. Peters an outdoor electrical socket was burning and smoke was coming from the roof. "I was just hoping no one was inside but when I looked through the front door I saw a lady in the house." The woman who owns the home with her husband recently had foot surgery and was sleeping on a couch downstairs. Adams made sure she and her dog got out safely, moments before the flames spread."I yelled for her to get out and by the time firefighters arrived it was pretty bad." Firefighters were able to recover the owner's watch and engagement ring. They believe the fire may have started when outdoor Christmas lights overloaded a circuit. Most of the structure suffered serious water and smoke damage and if Rick Adams didn't happen to be driving by, things could have been worse, "Somebody wanted me here for a reason and I helped as best I could." Firefighters advise using only UL-approved christmas lights. Its also a good idea to avoid overloading wall outlets and extension cords.
