Grassroots efforts stress importance of voting on National Voter Registration Day

Oct. 9 is the last day to register to vote if you haven't already.

ST. LOUIS — Just seven weeks from now, voters across the country will head to the polls to elect our next president. Tuesday was National Voter Registration Day. Grassroots groups everywhere spent the day letting people know there's still time to register to vote.

Oct. 9 is the last day to register to vote if you haven't already.

"We're trying to see if y'all are registered to vote, man,” music producer and University City business owner Marvin “DRed” Martin told a group of people outside of Prime 55 Restaurant on Delmar Loop.

For him, this is a mission that matters.

"It's a lot of people out here who can’t vote so we’re just trying to make sure everybody that can will vote because it's a bad thing to waste a vote,” he said.

He owns a transport service company. On Election Day, which happens to be his birthday, he plans to transport people to the polls all day long.

"It will be me and two other drivers, three vehicles and we'll be helping people get to the polls,” Martin said.

He isn't the only one stressing the importance of voting.

"Our field teams have actually been in high schools across St. Louis registering voters today that are of age," said Zoe Griffin with Action St. Louis.

The efforts are making a difference.

"We’re seeing a surge of voter registrations,” said Rick Stream, Republican Director of Elections for St. Louis County.

"Our folks are here after hours working, doing all the paperwork,” St. Louis County’s Democratic Director of Elections Eric Faye added.

At their office, the race is on to process those who are registering to vote and updating their addresses. Leaders say that's very important.

"A lot of people forget, if I move, I update my address with this government office and that government office. Well they don’t all talk to the Board of Elections, so it's important to check your voter registration so you don't run into any problems on Election Day,” Faye stressed.

"Elections sometimes come down to one to two votes,” Stream added.

"No matter who y'all choose to vote for. Just know your vote counts and it matters,” Rapper Deuce Sheezy said.
