Ashcroft says comments he made that fathers would risk dying to send their children back to school are being misconstrued. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri’s Republican secretary of state on Thursday said an investigation by his office found two people voted at least twice during the 2020 general election.

Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said two people voted in person in St. Charles County and also sent in mail-in ballots to Florida.

Ashcroft referred findings to the St. Charles County prosecutor, who didn't immediately return Associated Press requests for comment Thursday.

Ashcroft said he’s confident that the cases of alleged double-voting were isolated incidents that do not indicate a broader problem with the security of Missouri elections. However, he continues to encourage the legislature to pass strong election changes that would deter and eliminate voter fraud.

“Elections can come down to one vote,” Secretary Ashcroft said. “Election fraud is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in the state of Missouri.”

Secretary Ashcroft supports strong voter identification requirements to ensure fair and accurate voting across the state. “Voter identification just promotes accountability and credibility,” Ashcroft said. “Regardless of whether one vote would change the outcome, we want security and accuracy in Missouri elections – that’s the bottom line.”
