ST. LOUIS — Democrat Wesley Bell won the race for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday.
U.S. Rep. Cori Bush, D-St. Louis, currently holds the seat. She ran for reelection but lost the primary to Bell.
Bell was raised in north St. Louis County. He earned degrees from Lindenwood University and the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. Bell was elected to the Ferguson City Council in 2015 following the death of Michael Brown Jr.
He was voted in as St. Louis County prosecutor over long-time prosecutor Bob McCulloch. Bell says he has focused on reducing violent crime while reforming the criminal justice system. He wants to protect voting rights, abortion access and gun safety laws.
