ILLINOIS, USA — Here's what you need to know if you want your vote to count in the 2024 Illinois general election.

When are polls open?

Registered Illinois voters can cast their ballot through Nov. 4, the day before Election Day, without having to provide a reason at the office of their local election authority or an early voting center. Curbside voting is also available at early voting sites. Click here to find an early voting location near you.

On Election Day, Illinois polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are in line by 7 p.m., you will still be allowed to vote.

What do I need to bring to the polls?

Illinois does not require most registered voters to present photo ID to vote.

However, one form of ID with the voter's current address is needed when an election judge challenges the person's right to vote or the voter submitted a mail-in registration form that did not include an Illinois identification/driver license number or Social Security number.

Two forms of ID that list the voter's current address are required when the voter is registering in person; filing an address change in person; or filing a name change in person, including in the voter's home precinct on Election Day.

The following forms of ID are accepted:

  • Passport or military ID;
  • Driver license or state ID card;
  • College, university, school or work ID;
  • Vehicle registration card;
  • Lease, mortgage or deed to home;
  • Credit or debit card;
  • Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid card;
  • Insurance card;
  • Civic, union or professional membership card;
  • LINK, Public Aid or Department of Human Services card;
  • Or Illinois FOID card.

Examples of mail addressed to the voter that can be used as ID include:

  • School bill, transcript or report card;
  • Bank statement, pay stub or pension statement;
  • Utility, medical or insurance bill;
  • Or official mail from any government agency.

What if I forget my ID?

If a voter who is required to present ID cannot present it, they can cast a provisional ballot. In order for that provisional ballot to be counted, the voter must present ID to the election judges before 7 p.m. on Election Day or to the local election authority’s office by the end of the day on the Thursday following Election Day.

Provisional voters may check their ballot status starting two weeks after the election. If the ballot was not counted, you may also learn the reason why it was not.
