St. Louis Sheriff Vernon Betts narrowly lost his reelection bid in the Democratic primary race Tuesday night.
Former sheriff's deputy Alfred Montgomery won the nomination by 269 votes, taking 50.3% of the vote compared to Betts' 49.7%, according to initial results.
It was a successful rematch for Montgomery, who lost a previous bid against Betts in 2020 with only 28% of the vote to Betts' 61%.
Betts, 71, did not publicly say Tuesday night whether he would request a recount.
