St. Louis Cardinals recall rookie Ryan Helsley from Memphis

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have recalled rookie right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley from triple-A Rebirds and optioned rookie left-handed pitcher Genesis Cabrera to (Memphis) AAA.

The 24-year-old will be making his third appearance with the Cardinals after having been previously recalled on April 16 and again May 17. 

 The 6-2, 230-pound Oklahoma native has made four relief appearances with the Cardinals, totaling 8.0 innings pitched with just four hits allowed and 10 strikeouts for a 3.38 ERA. 

Three of his four appearances with the Cardinals, including his Major League debut on April 16, have been two innings or more.

Since returning to Memphis following an option on May 22, Helsley has made two starts, going 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA (5.2 IP/3 ER) and eight strikeouts. 

He’s 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in nine games (5 starts) for Memphis overall this season, striking out 22 batters in 23.1 IP and allowing just one home run. 

His most recent outing came in a start on May 31 vs. Oklahoma City when he fanned six batters in his 2.2 IP.
