ST. PETERS, Mo. — St. Peters is home to one of the most impressive recycling centers in St. Charles County. In 2018, Recycle City collected 20 million pounds of materials that were recycled.
The workers are in charge of shifting through the trash and sorting the items that can be recycled such as plastics, glass, paper and cardboard.
“An aluminum can every 60 days can be recycled. Here we bail it. We send it out to a processor. Within 60 days, it’s back on the shelves with product in it again,” said Cheryl Hanks-Sinecki, the Director of Environmental Services for the city of St. Peters.
Items like plastic and paper can be reused or turned into a recyclable material. St. Peters sells the salvageable material to outside contractors who then turn them into something else.
“If you look at the soles of your shoes, that’s a plastic that they’ve turned back into a rubber sole,” said Hanks-Sinecki.
Recyclables can also be transformed into school supplies, backpacks, carpets and broken up glass can be combined with concrete to create sidewalks.
There’s even drop-off locations and you don’t have to be a St. Peters resident to use it.
