The World's Aquarium on Laclede's Landing has announced that it will close on Sunday.
The not-for-profit aquarium was not open on Friday, and a sign posted on its front door read: "Danger -- this building has been condemned. All persons are warned to keep away."
The aquarium posted a statement on its website, which read in part:
"To all supporters -- it is with great sadness that we inform you of the cessation of operation of the World Aquarium...a children's place. We appreciate the pleasure of operation in the St. Louis region for the past 25 years that has borne the 5 versions of museum existence and to the millions that have enjoyed, learned and environmentally benefited from our presence including the 1000s of fish tanks donated to classrooms."
The aquarium said its living collection will be rehomed to other locations and that the board of directors will be evaluating the organization's future plans.
Reasons for the closure and the building's condemnation were not given at this time.
