ST. LOUIS — Saturday, March 23, was National Puppy Day. It's celebrated annually to show the unconditional love and affection puppies bring to our lives.
It was also a day to help raise awareness of a recent puppy mill campaign. Tuesday morning, Alicia McDonnell joined Mary Caltrider in the studio with the campaign's mascot, Wiggles, to share all about puppy mills and their campaign to stop them.
Puppy mills are mass breeding operations created to generate a profit at the expense of causing harm to animals. McDonnell explains that Missouri is the puppy mill capital of America. She shares how many puppy mills in the state offer little to no veterinary care for puppies, and frequently continuously impregnate female dogs until they can no longer reproduce.
Due to this, McDonnell and others came together to create an anti-puppy mill campaign called Bark to Ban Puppy Mills. Their mascot is Wiggles, who was bred in a puppy mill and as a result, suffers from anxiety. One tip she mentions is to avoid buying dogs from local pet stores because pet stores sell dogs from puppy mills.
She also encourages those interested to go to their website to learn about puppy mills and some steps to take action.
